Gretna, NE - Gretna Public Schools is proud to announce that Andy Boone, Director of Assessment and Nebraska's 2022 Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), has been honored with the prestigious national award. This recognition is the highest recognition given by the United States government for K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teaching.
Recognized for his commitment to advancing STEM education, Boone has 14 years of elementary teaching experience, including 11 years at Thomas Elementary and time at Harvest Hills Elementary. Passionate about mathematical literacy, he engages students through problem-solving and critical thinking.
Boone expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating, “It is a true honor to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. Even more of an honor has been getting to work with the administration, teachers, and students of Gretna Public Schools. This award is not possible without the support of my colleagues and being able to learn from their dedication to students each and every day.”
Superintendent Travis Lightle praised Boone’s achievement, saying, “Mr. Boone’s exceptional ability to connect with students across multiple grade levels demonstrates the true art of teaching mathematics. By seamlessly adapting complex concepts for kindergartners, first graders, and fifth graders alike, he transforms numbers from just figures on a page into student curiosity. His students didn’t just learn math, they came to love it.”
Thomas Elementary Principal Bret Basye reflected on Boone’s contributions, stating, "Mr. Boone’s impact in the classroom embodied Gretna Public Schools’ mission through his acceptance of all students and tireless efforts to maximize their potential. He created a safe yet challenging environment where students truly felt like mathematicians."
Harvest Hills Elementary Principal Kirsten Troester added, “Mr. Andy Boone's dedication to inspiring young minds in mathematics and science is one of many examples of excellence in education. His well-deserved receiving of the Presidential Award is a testament to his tireless efforts to foster a love of learning and prepare the next generation of leaders.”
As a Presidential Awardee, Boone receives a certificate signed by President Biden, a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation, and a trip to Washington D.C., for recognition events and professional development. He joins a distinguished network of over 5,500 honored educators since 1983.
